Medical Billing Services in Michigan
Billing, coding, credentialing and denial management for Michigan practices, with Medicare claims through Wisconsin Physicians Service (WPS) (Jurisdiction J8) and Michigan Medicaid handled by people who know the rules.

Medical billing for Michigan practices
Michigan practices deal with one dominant commercial insurer and a crowded Medicaid market. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network hold a large share of commercial lives, Priority Health is strong on the west side of the state, and WPS processes Medicare Part B under Jurisdiction 8. Michigan Medicaid and the Healthy Michigan Plan run mostly through nine Medicaid Health Plans across ten regions.
The plan list changes by region, from Detroit and Grand Rapids to the Upper Peninsula, and so do prior authorization rules. SFA Solutions works with Michigan practices remotely. We handle CHAMPS enrollment, Blue Cross and Blue Care Network claims, and Medicaid Health Plan denials, and we submit most clean claims within 24 hours.

Plan availability varies by Prosperity Region.
Timely filing
12 months from the date of service for fee-for-service claims; Medicaid Health Plans set their own limits by contract.
Commercial and Medicare Advantage
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network are the largest commercial carriers, followed by Priority Health, HAP, UnitedHealthcare and Aetna. Blue Cross, Humana, UnitedHealthcare and Priority Health hold large Medicare Advantage enrollment.
Prompt pay law
Under MCL 500.2006, health plans must pay clean claims within 45 days of receipt, with the clock paused while a notice of defects is pending. Late clean claims carry 12% simple annual interest. Medicaid HMO claims fall under MCL 400.111i.
Nurse practitioners
Restricted practiceMichigan NPs can prescribe nonscheduled drugs on their own, but need physician delegation to prescribe Schedule 2 to 5 controlled substances (MCL 333.17211a). NPs still enroll and bill under their own NPI with Medicare, CHAMPS and most commercial plans, so have the delegation documentation on file before credentialing applications go out.
Credentialing
Every rendering, billing and referring provider must be enrolled in CHAMPS before Michigan Medicaid or a Medicaid Health Plan will pay. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan's PPO network and Blue Care Network's HMO network have separate participation steps, so being in one does not put you in the other. Most commercial plans use CAQH ProView, so keep your attestation current every 120 days.
Billing challenges Michigan practices face
Regional Medicaid plan lists
Michigan's nine Medicaid Health Plans do not all operate in every region, and each sets its own authorization and claim rules. A patient who moves counties can change plans. We verify the member's plan in CHAMPS before each visit so claims go to the right payer.
Blue Cross versus Blue Care Network
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan PPO products and Blue Care Network HMO products have different networks, referral rules and authorization requirements. Billing a BCN member as if they had a PPO plan is a common source of denials. We check the product on each card and apply the right rules.
Medicaid eligibility churn
Medicaid and Healthy Michigan Plan members can lose or change coverage at renewal. A visit billed to coverage that ended last month denies, and the replacement payer's filing clock is already running. We run eligibility checks before each visit and rebill quickly when coverage changes.
