Medical billing for Missouri practices
Missouri practices work across two large metros and a lot of rural territory. Commercial coverage is split among Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna and Aetna. WPS processes Medicare Part B under Jurisdiction 5, and MO HealthNet covers Medicaid, including adults added through expansion.
Most MO HealthNet members are in managed care with Healthy Blue, Home State Health or UnitedHealthcare, and children in foster care are covered by Show Me Healthy Kids. Missouri NPs also practice under collaborative arrangements, which adds steps to credentialing. SFA Solutions works with Missouri practices remotely, from St. Louis and Kansas City to Springfield and the Ozarks, and submits most clean claims within 24 hours.

Commercial and Medicare Advantage
Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield serves most of the state, while Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City covers the Kansas City area. UnitedHealthcare, Cigna and Aetna are also major carriers, and Humana, UnitedHealthcare and Anthem hold large Medicare Advantage enrollment.
Prompt pay law
Under RSMo 376.383, a carrier must tell the provider within 30 processing days whether a claim is clean. Clean claims not paid by the 45th processing day after receipt carry interest of 1% per month plus a penalty of 1% of the claim per day.
Nurse practitioners
Restricted practiceMissouri NPs must keep a collaborative practice arrangement with a physician, and one physician can collaborate with no more than six full-time equivalent APRNs, physician assistants or assistant physicians, with some exemptions (RSMo 334.104). Payers usually ask for the collaborating physician's details, so keep the arrangement current before credentialing.
Credentialing
MO HealthNet enrollment applications go through Missouri Medicaid Audit and Compliance, and Healthy Blue, Home State Health and UnitedHealthcare each credential you separately once you have a Medicaid ID. Anthem and Blue KC are separate companies with separate contracts, so a Kansas City practice may need both. Most commercial carriers use CAQH ProView, so keep your attestation current every 120 days.
Billing challenges Missouri practices face
Two Blue plans in one state
Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City are separate companies with separate networks, payer IDs and policies. Sending a Blue KC claim to Anthem creates avoidable denials. We read the card prefix and route each claim to the right plan.
Managed care versus fee-for-service
Some MO HealthNet patients are fee-for-service and billed through eMOMED, while most are in a managed care plan with its own authorization rules. We verify the patient's coverage before each visit so the claim goes to the correct payer.
Collaborative practice paperwork
Missouri NPs need a collaborative practice arrangement on file, and changes to the collaborating physician can affect payer records. A mismatch can stall credentialing or trigger denials. We keep each provider's collaborative details aligned across Medicare, MO HealthNet and commercial payers.
